Before you begin to create your inspection template in iOn, you should have the inspection form already planned out — or if you are re-creating a paper form, have it handy. Make sure that you know each individual item that needs to be inspected and how those items will be grouped.

Note: See An Introduction to Inspection Forms for details about the components of an inspection form template (the template, groups, and items).

After your prep work, you can use the Inspection Setup screen to create the inspection form and publish it, and your drivers can then fill out the form as they inspect their vehicles. To do so, follow these steps:

Note: The steps below work from the specific to the general, meaning you start by creating the individual items, put them into logical groups, and then create the overall template.

  1. On the sidebar menu on the left, click .

  2. Click Inspection Setup on the flyout menu that appears.

The Inspection Setup screen's Templates tab will appear (unless you were on a different tab during your current iOn session).

  3. Follow the steps in Creating an Inspection Form Item to create the template's first item.
Note: If all the items you need have previously been created, skip down to step 5.
  4. Repeat step 3 for as many items as you need to add to the inspection form.

  5. Follow the steps in Creating an Inspection Form Group to create the template's first group.
Note: If you already created all the groups you need, skip down to step 7.
  6. Repeat step 5 for all the groups in the inspection form.

  7. Click the Templates tab, if you aren't already on it.

  8. Click Add New at the top right of the screen.

The Add Template dialog box will appear.

  9. Type the name of the inspection form in the Name box, such as Full Pretrip Inspection.

This is the name that will appear on your drivers' mobile devices.

  10. Click the Vehicle Type drop-down arrow and select the type of vehicle the inspection form will be performed on.
Note: This list is populated with the asset types of the group you have selected in the Group Chooser (or a parent group). (See Choosing a Group to View Globally for details on how to change your chosen group.) You can add a new type in the group's Edit Group dialog box, as shown in Editing a Group.
  11. In the Available Groups grid (on the right), select the check boxes to the left of all the groups you want to include in the inspection template.

  12. Click the Add Group .

The groups will appear in the Groups in Template grid (on the left).
Note: If you added a group in error, you can select its check box in the Groups in Template list and then click the Remove Group  to remove it.
The selected groups will be displayed and numbered in the order they are listed in the Available Groups grid (that is, in the order they were created), which is the order they will be listed in the published inspection form.

  13. To move a group higher or lower in the list, follow these steps:

    1. Click  between its order number and its name.

    2. Drag it up or down to where you want it to be placed.

    3. Release the group when it's in the spot you need.

    4. Repeat steps a through c for all the groups in the template you need to reorder.

  14. Click Done.

Your new template will appear in the Templates list, and a success message will appear at the bottom of the screen.

  15. Click OK to dismiss it. (Or you can wait a few seconds, and it will automatically close.)

  16. See Publishing an Inspection Form if you're ready to send the template as an inspection form to your drivers' mobile devices.
