If you are a CalAmp Vision customer, you will likely want to take advantage of the alerts you can configure so that you're informed of certain camera-based events, such as when it detects drowsy driving. This article covers how to set up such a notification; you can do so as follows:
Note: For more information about CalAmp Vision, go to What Can You Expect with CalAmp Vision?. For general data about the Admin - Notfications screen, check out Viewing Your Notification Configurations.
If you need the notification to be triggered and sent only during a certain portion of the day (for example, if you want to be notified about drowsy driving only at night), it will need to have a schedule. Make sure to create that schedule before adding your new alert, if it doesn't already exist, following the steps in Adding a Schedule.
- In the sidebar menu on the left, click .
- Click Notifications on the flyout menu that appears.
The Admin - Notifications screen will appear.
- Click Add New at the top right of the screen.
The Add Notification dialog box will appear.
- Type the name to use for the alert in the Notification Name field, such as Vision - Drowsy Driving for a notice that the camera has detected that the driver is drowsy while operating a vehicle.
By default, the group you currently have selected in the Group Chooser will be set for the group to add the notification to.
- If you would like to place it in a different group, click the Group drop-down arrow and select the group from the list.
Note: Only assets in the group you choose will trigger the Vision notification you configure, plus its subgroups if you make the alert inheritable.
Assets in groups that are higher up in your organization's hierarchy (such as the specified group's parent group) will NOT trigger the notification.
If you want the new notification to be activated by all your assets, place it in your top-level group (and leave Inheritable selected). - Click the Notification Type drop-down arrow and select iOn Event.
- If the alert should be triggered and sent only during a certain portion of the day, click the Schedule drop-down arrow and select the name of the schedule.
Note: You will only be able to apply schedules in the same group as the notification (or a schedule from a parent group that is inheritable).
As mentioned earlier, you should create the schedule before you add the alert. See Adding a Schedule for details.
After you select a schedule, a new field will appear to its right, Schedule Reference.
- Normally, you will click the Schedule Reference drop-down arrow and select Inside Schedule, which means that the alert is sent out during the hours set by the schedule.
If the notification should be triggered and sent during the exact opposite segment of the day from the schedule, select Outside Schedule instead.
- If you would like the alert to be sent in Spanish, click the SMS/Email Language drop-down arrow and select Spanish (Mexico).
If you want it to be sent in English, you can leave this at its default selection.
- Type an explanation of what the notification is designed to inform the user about in the Description field (such as "Vision camera has detected that the driver is driving while drowsy").
- Click the Severity drop-down arrow and select the priority level of the alert: Low, Medium, High, or Urgent (formerly Critical).
- Leave the Notification Status field at its default value of Enabled.
Note: If the notification is set to Disabled or Suspended, its triggering event won't be looked for, and the alert won't be reported to CalAmp. But this won't likely be what you want when you are adding a new notification. - If you want the alert to be triggered by assets in subgroups of the group it is assigned to (so the subgroups, or child groups, inherit the notification from the parent group), leave Inheritable selected.
If you want it to be sent out only for that single group's assets, deselect Inheritable.
- Under Triggers, click the Event drop-down arrow and select the camera event you are configuring a notification for. These are the available Vision alert events:
- Potential Crash: CalAmp will send the notification if conditions suggest that the vehicle might have been in an accident.
- Drinking Distracted Driving: The notification will be sent if the driver blocks their mouth with a beverage container.
- Smoking Distracted Driving: The notice will be sent if the driver brings a cigarette, cigar, or electronic cigarette to their mouth.
- Tailgating: The alert will be triggered if the driver follows the vehicle in front of them too closely.
- Traffic Speed Violation: The alert will be sent if the driver drives more than 5 mph over the speed limit.
- Stop Sign: The notice will be sent if the driver doesn't stop at a Stop sign.
- Lane Drift: CalAmp will send the notification if the vehicle is starting to leave its lane.
- Max Speed: The notification will be sent if the vehicle’s speed exceeds 75 mph.
- SOS: The alert will be triggered if the driver presses the physical panic button on the camera and holds for at least two seconds. This is generally used for emergency situations.
- Harsh Acceleration: The alert will be triggered if the driver accelerates too quickly (with a value of 4.5 mph/sec).
- Harsh Braking: The notification will be sent if the driver brakes too hard at once (with a value of 4.5 mph/sec).
- Cornering: The notification will be sent if the driver corners too severely (with a value of 4.5 mph/sec).
- Distracted Driving: The alert will be sent if the camera determines that the driver isn’t focused on the road.
- Drowsy Driving Detected: The alert will be triggered if the camera detects that the driver’s head is dropping or their eyes are closing.
- Cellphone Distracted Driving: The notification will be sent if the driver blocks their face with their cell phone.
- Lane Departure Found: The alert will be sent if the camera detects that the vehicle has gone out of its lane.
- Forward Collision Warning: CalAmp will send the notification if the front of the vehicle has been hit.
- Potential Crash: CalAmp will send the notification if conditions suggest that the vehicle might have been in an accident.
- Scroll down to the Notification Actions section.
- Select the Email and/or SMS On/Off toggle ( means selected, and deselected) to have the notification sent to the concerned parties (such as one of your organization's software administrators, a driver supervisor, or yourself) by email or text and then follow step 17 and/or 18, respectively.
Note: Specifying at least one email or mobile number is required before you can save the alert. - For Email, follow these steps:
- Type (or copy and paste) the first recipient's email address on the Primary Recipients line.
- If you want the notification to be sent to multiple people, type a comma after the first address and then enter the next recipient's email address (and so on).
Note: You can now include a space after the comma. (Previously, this caused an error, but now, it's acceptable to either space the email addresses out or leave no space between them.) - To add carbon copy (CC) recipients, click Add Secondary Recipients and enter their email addresses where "CC: Enter email(s)" appears.
- On the Email Subject line, type the email subject text (perhaps just the name or description of the alert).
- Type (or copy and paste) the first recipient's email address on the Primary Recipients line.
- For SMS, type the cell phone number of the person you want to receive the text on its Enter Number line, using the format +13175551234.
To add multiple people, place a comma after the preceding phone number and then type the next one.
Note: You can now include a space after the comma. (Previously, this caused an error, but now, it's acceptable to either space the phone numbers out or leave no space between them.) - Click Done.
If the group you placed the alert in is the one you have selected in the Group Chooser (or is a child of it and you have View Subgroups selected), your new alert will appear in the Admin - Notifications list.
Also, a success message will appear at the bottom of the screen.
- Click OK to dismiss it. (Or you can wait a few seconds, and it will automatically close.)
PRO TIP
If you have previously created a CalAmp Vision notification, you can copy it if you need another and make slight modifications, such as one for a different group. See the second section of Adding a Notification (Alert), "Duplicating a Notification," for details.
